Isn’t it strange to want to pursue a career in a field you have zero knowledge about?
In a survey that was recently conducted among 14 countries, people were asked about their thoughts on the value of science and their knowledge towards their subject. 92% of people interviewed (primarily teenagers and adults) wanted to pursue science as a career. This is honestly wonderful because science is truly an amazing subject and has so much to offer. However, this survey also cites that 86% of all those surveyed had limited knowledge about or did not know science at all. Another survey conducted reported that 7 in 10 students believe they aren’t intelligent enough to pursue science as a career. This in turn causes many of these children to give up scientific education as early as high school
Many people, including those 92%, do not understand science yet, but they understand the value of science. Some people think of science as a way to ensure stability. As most know, science degrees can lead to more opportunities in the job market and can generally ensure a stable salary. However, as important as stability is science has plenty more to offer. Educating yourself in topics of science guides you to possibly contributing to society or solving prevalent issues like computing plausible solutions to climate change. Furthermore, science can help us survive; perhaps a vaccine for COVID-19 or figuring out how to prevent cancer.
Let me answer my question from earlier: Isn’t it strange to want to pursue a career in a field you have zero knowledge about?
No.
You read it correctly. A scientist always begins with a question about how the world works and does anything to get their answer. These questions can be anything. From how a dishwasher works to how life came to be. A scientist is simply created through curiosity. If you follow your questions and try to understand the phenomena behind their answers, you are on your journey to become a scientist.
Those 92% who wanted to pursue science aren’t strange. They’re just Qurious.
